The Lakers have retired Kobe Bryant’s two jerseys -- #8 and #24. During the retirement ceremony at half-time, Lakers president and all-time great Magic Johnson was there to share his thoughts to the entire arena. He called Kobe the greatest to ever wear purple and gold. And Magic may have a point.

Kobe was a five-time NBA Champion, a gold-medal winner with Team USA, an MVP, an All-Star, and had dozens more awards and accolades. He once scored 81 points in a single game. He is the all-time leader in many statistical categories for the Lakers. But what puts him above the rest? Passion.

Kobe had a fiery passion for basketball that is unsurpassed by anyone at any point in their lives. But hey, what about Michael Jordan, the greatest to ever play the game? Whereas MJ was obsessed with winning, Kobe was obsessed with making himself better. There’s a difference. Though Kobe lacked the leadership MJ brought to the floor, he was arguably better as a basketball player. And he wouldn’t be that if he wasn’t filled with passion.

Kobe was known as a perfectionist who would practice for hours on end. He was unapologetic about his stature as the Lakers’ top dog and would not let anyone in his way. Just ask Shaq.

Of course, this passion can also have negative effects, but for the most part, it was what made Kobe Bryant a legend.
